Drawing of Dental Implant Superimposed on Tooth

Our periodontists are considered the lead surgical specialists for dental implants in the country. Many of our dental implant patients in Beverly Hills are referred to us because of our periodontists expertise in complex cases, as well as their commitment to achieving exceptional aesthetic results.

A number of these cases have been featured in articles in scientific journals that Dr. Anson has authored to share his expertise in aesthetic anterior dental implant techniques with his colleagues.

Dr. Anson can surgically remove teeth using this special technique that is designed to minimize discomfort and promote much faster healing. This advanced technique also saves and preserves the bone surrounding the tooth, which is very helpful and important for placing an implant.

If you are missing teeth, our periodontists will evaluate you and your situation thoroughly and completely to determine if you are a dental implant candidate. If you do qualify, dental implants are usually the favored, superior option for replacing your teeth.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants serve as replacement tooth roots, providing virtually the same function as natural tooth roots. Dental implants stimulate bone growth, preserve remaining bone, and provide a strong foundation for replacement teeth.

This “state-of-the-art” technology enables our periodontists to repair and improve the function and appearance of your smile, improving your overall health and the confidence that comes from a natural-looking smile.

Dental Implant Overiew

The results that our periodontists have achieved with aesthetic dental implant treatment over the years have enhanced their reputation for consistently delivering exceptional care to his patients in Beverly Hills. Superior aesthetic results depend upon a number of important aspects of the treatment process that they have perfected over the years, including:

  • A special technique must be used for removing teeth without damaging the bone surrounding them.
  • Precision with positioning and surgical placement of dental implants is critical to ensure the natural-looking appearance of the crowns that will be attached to the implants.
  • Determining when to add or graft bone to correct defects in the bone, improve the site for dental implant placement, and improve facial contours.
  • Careful management of the soft tissue during procedures can preserve the contours of the gums around the implant-supported crowns and create a more natural-looking smile.

A true pioneer, Dr. Anson has developed various atraumatic techniques that have allowed him to achieve superior results for many different challenging situations. His expertise in tissue sculpting further enhances the overall aesthetic result for his patients in Beverly Hills.

Dr. Anson discusses why it is important to choose your dental implant specialist wisely.

The Benefits of Getting Dental Implants

Dental implant procedures are the only tooth replacement options that provide the following benefits:

  • Prevents bone deterioration (resorption)
  • Health of the adjacent teeth is not compromised
  • Best long-term prognosis and highest success rates
  • Most cost-effective option in the long-term

Single Missing Tooth

For Beverly Hills patients that are missing a single tooth, the two most common options to replace it are a crown supported by a dental implant or a tooth-supported bridge. The major disadvantage of a bridge is that the adjacent teeth must be cut down into peg shapes in order to fit and cement the bridge in place.

Bridges can provide a good aesthetic and functional result for a period of time. However, since the bridge does not replace the tooth root, the bone that surrounded the root deteriorates, or melts away.

The advantages of an implant crown include:

  • The implant crown looks, feels and functions like a natural tooth
  • The long-term aesthetics are superior to a bridge
  • A dental implant does not decay
  • There is no need to grind down the adjacent natural teeth
  • Bone resorption (deterioration) is prevented

Multiple Missing Teeth

There are three treatment options for replacing multiple missing teeth: a tooth-supported bridge, a removable partial, and an implant-supported bridge. One of the most serious consequences of a partial denture is that it actually causes the bone to resorb or deteriorate more rapidly. Also, the clasps on the partial put pressure on the teeth they hook onto, which loosens the teeth and eventually leads to tooth loss.

The advantages of an implant bridge include:

  • Implant bridges look, feel, and function like natural teeth
  • They are more comfortable and stable than partial dentures
  • Natural biting and chewing capacity is restored
  • Dental implants virtually stop the bone resorption process
  • The integrity of the facial structures is maintained
  • The health of the adjacent natural teeth is not compromised

Complete Tooth Loss

In the past, if Beverly Hills patients were missing all of their teeth, the only option was dentures. This prosthesis has numerous disadvantages:

  • Dentures are uncomfortable and often painful
  • Dentures become loose as the bone melts away
  • Without adhesives, dentures often fall out when laughing, sneezing, or coughing
  • People with dentures visibly age much faster
  • Bad breath is common with dentures
  • Dentures do not allow people to eat many types of food (steak, apples, etc)

These problems can be solved with implant-supported dentures or bridges, which are stable and maintain the integrity of the facial structures by preserving the bone.

The advantages of implant-supported replacement teeth include:

  • They are more comfortable and stable than traditional dentures
  • Dental implants virtually stop the bone resorption process
  • It is possible to maintain the integrity of facial structures
  • Appearance is improved
  • The roof of the mouth does not need to be covered, so food can be tasted
  • Relines and repairs are infrequent compared to traditional dentures
  • Natural biting and chewing capacity is restored

How We Diagnose and Determine Treatment

Dental implants can be placed for a single tooth, multiple teeth, or replace teeth in the entire mouth. At our Beverly Hills office, each patient is evaluated using state-of-the-art diagnostic tools such as a Kodak 8100 3D scanner to determine the exact anatomy for dental implant placement. Factors that influence the placement of your dental implants include:

  • Reason for tooth loss or removal
  • Location of the tooth
  • Quality of the bone
  • Height, width, and depth of the bone

In many instances, our periodontists can place the implant on the same day that the tooth is removed but if the area does not accommodate the implant, then an additional healing time of about three months will be required.

How Do I know Dental Implants Are Right for Me?

After an initial consultation, their dentist will then refer patients to our periodontists for an implant consultation and evaluation appointment. At this appointment, our doctors will evaluate bone and dental structures to determine the best possible treatment to restore function as well as achieve a beautiful aesthetic result. They will discuss their findings with patients and determine a treatment plan and the fees involved. Before we begin treatment, our doctors will consult with your dentist to provide the best possible team approach in restoring a beautiful smile.

Dental Implants Process

Scan and Treatment Planning

The first step for patients is a consultation with their dentist to determine if they are a candidate for dental implants. This usually involves x-rays and may include taking impressions for models of their teeth. If patients have already lost a significant amount of bone, additional x-rays taken at another facility that specializes in this type of x-ray may also be recommended.

Tooth Removal Technique

One of the critical factors in achieving excellent aesthetic results is the approach our doctors take to surgically remove teeth that need to be replaced. Using a gentle technique, they are able to remove teeth without removing or damaging the bone surrounding them by:

  • Administering local anesthesia with a controlled pressure that causes little to no discomfort.
  • Waiting for the anesthesia to take complete effect before beginning any aspect of the procedure.
  • Sectioning the tooth into two or three parts and removing each part.
  • Removing the root carefully to preserve the surrounding bone.
  • Bone grafting the socket to preserve the maximal amount of bone in certain situations, but not all.

This is essential for optimal implant positioning and placement to support the final aesthetic outcome.  Patients in Beverly Hills facing impending tooth loss should consult with our periodontists while the tooth is still in place so that they can provide an ideal treatment plan.

Surgical Placement of the Implant into Patient’s Jaw

When it comes to surgical implant placement, experience has a significant impact on the outcome. Having placed several thousand dental implants in all types of situations, our periodontists are able to: Thoroughly evaluate the thickness and density of bone. Anticipate potential challenges and address them during the procedure. Position the dental implant in precisely the right location. Achieve natural looking emergence from the gum tissue when the final crown is attached to the implant. This precision is the result of years of experience, countless hours of continuing education and research, and the refinement of delicate surgical techniques designed to enhance aesthetic results.

Appropriate Bone Grafting

Some dentists, periodontists, and oral surgeons will suggest unnecessary bone grafting procedures for patients who do not require this additional measure. When patients in Beverly Hills come to our office for a second opinion, it is often determined that bone grafting is entirely unnecessary, and the office was trying to add to the cost of the procedure. Our periodontists only recommends bone grafting and augmentation in cases where it is needed and perform a technique that is: Minimally invasive Often less costly Yields rapid healing. Dr. Anson teaches these procedures to other specialists, lecturing both nationally and internationally on how to achieve results without causing undue discomfort to the patient.

Management of the Soft Tissue

If the tissue surrounding the new crown on the dental implant does not have a natural appearance, the overall aesthetic result will not be ideal. In addition to precise placement of the dental implant, it is essential to handle the gum tissue throughout the procedure. Improper tissue management can result in the appearance of small black triangles between the teeth, or unnatural contours of the gums around the teeth. As a Beverly Hills periodontist with special expertise in aesthetic soft tissue sculpting, our periodontists routinely achieves naturally beautiful smiles with aesthetic dental implants and tissue.

3 Steps to Dental Implant Process: Implant Placement, Abutment Attachment, and Addition of Replacement Teeth

Implant Placement Procedure

a gentle surgical technique, the dental implants are placed in the bone. Our periodontists use a special type of implant, which in most cases, will not need to be placed completely under the gum tissue, eliminating the need for a second procedure. After the procedure for placing the implant, the implants are left undisturbed for several weeks so the bone can grow and form around the implants to create a strong bond to them. During this phase, Beverly Hills patients may have a type of temporary replacement teeth, so that they won’t be without teeth during the treatment.

Abutment Attachment Procedure

When the implant is ready to be restored by a dentist, an abutment (a small connector post) is connected to each implant. The new replacement teeth will eventually be attached to the abutments.

Fabrication of Replacement Teeth

A series of appointments with a dentist will be needed to take impressions of the patient’s teeth and the implant abutments; place temporary replacement teeth; select the appropriate color shade for replacement teeth and try them to make sure they fit properly. Between these appointments, the laboratory technician will create replacement teeth and the underlying structures that will be attached to the implants.
