Periodontal disease often does not involve discomfort but in its most severe form, leads to bone and tooth loss. Early diagnosis is key to developing a periodontal treatment plan that is minimally invasive while fully restoring the function and appearance of your teeth. We recommend visiting Dr. David Anson at our Beverly Hills office to receive experienced treatment for long-term dental health.

What Types of Periodontal Treatments are Available?

Dr. Anson has evolved treatment options for a wide range of periodontal diseases that range from mild to severe. Relying on innovative microsurgical techniques, advanced periodontal technology, and decades of training in periodontics, Beverly Hills periodontist Dr. Anson has provided his patients with exceptional care for everything from deep cleaning to bone regeneration and dental implants.

Non-Surgical Treatment: Scaling and Root Planing

Gum inflammation is the main symptom for many of our patients. The cause of this inflammation is plaque and tartar, which can accumulate on natural teeth or restorations such as crowns and dental implants. When caught early, periodontal disease often requires nothing more than a deep cleaning to remove all plaque and tartar and prevent bacteria from damaging the bone and gum tissue.

Periodontal Surgery

Our patients who have more severe gum disease develop deeper gaps, or pockets, between their teeth and gums. Larger pockets mean that it is easier for infections to enter and cause damage to bone and gum tissue. Patients may require surgery in these cases to treat the infection. During surgery, Dr. Anson will:

  • Administer local anesthesia using a special device that causes little to no discomfort.
  • Make a small incision between the gum and tooth to gain access to the infected area.

Once the area is thoroughly treated, he will place tiny sutures to ensure comfortable and rapid healing. After the infection heals, patients can return for preventative treatment to help ensure that the infection does not occur again.  Good oral hygiene is also essential to achieve a stable long-term result.

Bone Regeneration & Guided Tissue Regeneration

Patients who prolong the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease will often require more extensive surgical procedures to restore lost bone and tissue. To stimulate the body to regrow bone and ligaments that have been damaged by gum disease, Dr. Anson will evaluate patients in Beverly Hills and the surrounding areas for:

  • Guided tissue regeneration: Membranes or barriers are inserted between the teeth and gums to encourage ligaments to regrow and bone to regenerate. This will enable the teeth to be better supported or create a strong foundation for dental implants.
  • Bone grafts: Tiny fragments of bone from your own body, sterile material from tissue donors, or biocompatible material replaces gaps in your bone. The defects in your own bone are filled to help the long-term stability of your teeth.

Both guided tissue regeneration and bone grafts are often used to help retain teeth, which is the optimal goal of periodontal treatment. This can often avoid dental implant placement.

Crown Lengthening

If there is not enough natural tooth for a crown or filling when a tooth is fractured or has very deep decay significantly below the gumline, then Dr. Anson can remove some bone to expose enough tooth structure to restore and save the tooth in the right circumstances. In some cases, when patients have a gummy smile, crown lengthening can be applied to improve the appearance of your smile. During a crown lengthening procedure, Dr. Anson will:

  • Expose more of the tooth structure.
  • Reshape gum and bone tissue to sculpt your smile.
  • Balance the gum and teeth to enhance the appearance.

Depending on whether the procedure is cosmetic or necessary for a restorative dental procedure, Dr. Anson will have a slightly different focus during the procedure. Ultimately, Dr. Anson performs all procedures while keeping in mind the long-term functional and aesthetic results of each procedure.

Soft Tissue Grafts

A tissue graft transfers gum tissue from one area of your mouth to an area of gum recession. Gum recession can be a progressive problem which exposes the roots of your teeth that can make teeth:

  • Sensitive
  • Susceptible to decay
  • Uncomfortable when eating or drinking hot or cold.

By applying the No Hole surgical technique, tissue sculpting rather than a gum graft, can often be done, which is minimally invasive and fast-healing. The No Hole technique cannot be done is all situations however, but Dr. Anson is well versed in all of the techniques of root coverage.
